On Wednesday afternoon, November 24th at 2.30pm in the Plough Gallery, John Hayes, long-time Torrington resident and former Deputy Head at Great Torrington School, will talk about his recently self-published book, Greco Files.
Since 1997, John and his wife Mary have divided their time between Torrington and a small village on the Mani peninsula of southern mainland Greece. Greco Files is part memoire, part commentary. Put in the context of Greek mythology, history and geography and set against a background of current issues such as climate change, wildfires, water supply and economic crisis, it traces their experiences as they fashion a new chapter in their lives as the 21st Century unfolds, Greco Files has already received some acclaim and a first reprint is underway.
John’s presentation will describe his journey as a novice author and will be illustrated by readings from his book, Greek music and ‘slides’. It should appeal to anyone curious to find out what their ex-teacher has been doing since retirement more than 20 years ago; to anyone with a yearning to write and publish a book; to anyone with a passion for Greece as a holiday destination and to anyone with an inkling to retire to a place in the sun . . . and where better than Greece?
