Join the artists for a Walking Event on Saturday 22 July, 11am - 4pm (transport provided if too wet)

  • 11am: Meet at The Plough Arts Centre to explore the foot sinks into it and chat with artists Erika Cann, Millie Laing-Tate and Laura Robertson. Decide how best to get to Bideford.
  • 12 noon: Set off on foot from The Plough, following the Tarka Trail along the river towards Bideford (or car or bus depending on the weather).
  • 3pm: Arrive at The Burton in Bideford and have a look around their exhibition Revealing the Human Form: Sculpture From Leading British Artists. There will be a brief talk and time for discussion.
  • 4pm: Event ends. The No.75 bus leaves from The Burton back to The Plough at 4.27pm.

Artists Erika, Millie and Laura will begin the day’s event at The Plough by talking about some of the ideas behind their trio exhibition the foot sinks into it. They will then guide a walk along the Tarka Trail, which twists and turns its way right next to the Torridge River towards Bideford. During the course of the walk, the artists will share their observations of the surrounding environment in relation to their practices - finding inspiration as the trail unfolds. This will be the first time any of the three artists have taken this particular route and they are keen to invite others to join them in the process of discovering through walking. Fellow walkers are seen as equal explorers on this journey and are encouraged to share their own points of interest along the way.

The walk will conclude at The Burton in Bideford, where there’ll be the chance to have a look at Revealing the Human Form: Sculpture From Leading British Artists. The Burton’s Exhibitions and Collections Manager, Warren Collum, will give a brief talk about their show, which will be followed by the chance to share thoughts about the two exhibitions.

Other things to note:
- The Tarka trail is tarmacked and relatively flat. There is a steep section from the Plough down to the trail but car rides will be available down to the Puffing Billy (where the Tarka trail section begins)

- The distance from Torrington to Bideford is approximately 6 miles (9.5km), so please make sure to bring comfortable footwear (and waterproofs just in case) and plenty of water and food. We will be pausing regularly en route and have left plenty of time for breaks.
- The No.75 bus leaves at 4.27pm from The Burton to The Plough, for all those that need to retrieve their cars.

We hope to see you there!
