Patrick Dunn will perform a set of five short audiovisual pieces inspired by his experience of synesthesia. Although classically trained as a musician, he did not pursue a successful professional career in classical performance, he says because as he realised only later in life, that he does not perceive music primarily through sound, but through vivid visual experiences.
Each piece begins with an idea prompted by a particular aspect of synesthesia, such as its sometimes unsettling unpredictability in generating visual responses. The resulting works are fully audiovisual: neither the sound nor the visuals are intended to stand alone, and each depends on the other to create a complete experience.
The performances are largely live, with Patrick "playing" the visuals as actively as the music. Using two keyboards, a controller and a laptop, he manipulates both elements in real time. Most of the time, Ableton and Resolume are tightly synchronised, although they are occasionally operated independently to achieve specific creative effects.
Patrick's professional showreel, which showcases his work touring with artists rather than this more personal audiovisual practice, can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/a42rOMQ4Wko?is=8pAhP08pDIk54tY1.
Patrick often provides the visuals for each Breezeblock Beats event in Frome and we are delighted to welcome him to North Devon.
Flux-us
As Flux-us (Andrew Shackleton - co-founder of Breezeblock Beats in Frome and half of the electronic music duo Gnostic Rebellion) creates immersive audio/visual experiences which are intended to be transcendent.
Always working from the premise that “we come from the darkness into the light” he explores and utilises esoteric, occult and psychedelic themes with both visuals and sound.
He has been making music using a variety of tools, starting with Reason, Ableton Live, and now mainly using various analogue hardware synthesisers and instruments.
Terminal Optimism
Original founder of Breeezeblock Beats in Frome. Terminal Optimism blends found sounds with home made instruments and effects pedals, tape loops, drones and dissonant ambience to create a tapestry of sonic neurodivergence that blends the DIY punk aesthetic with pioneering electronic experimentation.
Long time friend and supporter of Pattern Recognition, it is great to welcome Terminal Optimism back to North Devon.

MAF
When asked for an artist blurb, Breezeblock alumni MAF simply said "Repetitive noise on analogue synths." We could just leave it there, but that in no way describes the incredibly absorbing, expansive, hypnotic soundscapes and drones that MAF is able to command with such precision.
It is a delight to be able to showcase MAF at Pattern Recognition and we sincerely hope you will join us to welcome all of these stalwarts of the South West electronic music scene to North Devon for Pattern Recogniton's third birthday celebration at the un-usual venue of Barnstaple Guildhall
