Tutor: Tess James
A FREE 2 hour workshop to design and make a short mobile game using Downpour. Suitable for all ages!
This workshop is designed for beginners and we'll be making a very simple game based on a core game mechanic of multiple choice. There's lots more to explore in terms of game-making, so don't worry if you don't finish your project in just 2 hours! After the workshop, you will have the basic skills to experiment more at home!

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

In this workshop, you will...

1. Learn how to use the app Downpour to create a game with multiple choices and endings.

2. Experiment with writing branching storylines and creating simple animations

3. Have fun!

A little taster...

WHAT TO BRING

  • A smartphone with Downpour downloaded
  • A charger for your phone
  • Simple ideas for your game - drawings, writing, inspiration

NOTICE TO ADULTS: If you are lending your own smart phone to a young person, we ask that you stay for the duration of the workshop to supervise their use of it. We cannot take responsibility for how any personal devices that participants bring with them are used during the workshop!

ABOUT WORKSHOP LEADER

Tess James (she/they) is not only part of the Plough Team, but also has a secret identity as a writer & games designer...

While studying Fine Art at Kingston University, they realised that not all art has to be hung on the white walls of a gallery - sometimes it comes in the form of computer games instead! Inspired by classic games like Fallout, Mass Effect, and Life is Strange, where your choices matter, Tess has created many of her own experimental interactive fiction games (both on- and offline), as well as leading narrative and level design within teams for more ambitious games and projects.

Tess continues to develop their practice, currently studying an MA in Indie Games Development with Falmouth University.

Running time 120 minutes
