Icarus Theatre present
‘The Lesson’ by Eugene Ionesco, translation by Donald Watson
featuring CREATIVE CAPTIONING. Age Advisory 14yrs+
In this blistering, magical and award-winning production of Eugène Ionesco’s classic dark comedy, a mild-mannered professor takes on a new pupil, and swiftly descends into tyranny, becoming bent on her destruction; a comically surreal exposé of power, knowledge and those who hoard both. Dynamic projection design interweaves exciting new Creative Captioning technology to ensure that every performance is accessible for deaf and hard of hearing audiences.
More Info:
The Lesson is both hysterical farce and riveting tragedy; an absurdist one act play that explores the depths of totalitarianism and dictatorship. A comedy where a pupil refuses to submit to her professor’s ideas, culminating in subversion of the comedy and her harrowing assault and murder.
This play was intended as a warning against Nazi fascism and the time is perfect for the audience to make comparisons to contemporary government handling of the COVID-19 pandemic: a farce turned deadly serious.
“Icarus Theatre’s production of The Lesson is a brilliant piece of theatre, and a fantastic example of how creative captioning can not only open up the experience to a hard of hearing audience, but can also beautifully add to the aesthetic and design of the full piece, creating a rich experience that everyone can enjoy and benefit from. It is one of the best examples of this style of work I’ve seen, and will be watching its future life eagerly - hopefully (and deservedly) one day in the West End! “
