FIGHTING THE MONSTER (21 mins, September 2026)

FIGHTING THE MONSTER is a snapshot of the Torrington community's shock at plans to build a massive AI data centre - the biggest single-site one in Europe - on their doorstep. Filmed on a domestic camcorder in a handful of days in early September 2026 it records their move from disbelief to resistance. People power, fuelled by the town's strong community spirit, unites indigenous and incomer inhabitants as they battle to protect their environment, their town and their deeply-held values from international profiteers. The Torrington campaign is at the forefront of campaigns against AI 'hyperscale' data centres and is getting international as well as national attention. The film has received strong viewer responses from across the country and includes photographs by the acclaimed photographer James Ravilious, who lived in the area and made it the central subject of his work. There will be a Q & A with the film's director, cameraman and editor John Furse (with Gus Coral), who has deep family connections with the nearby village of Dolton.
