Award-winning British songwriters, composers and multi-instrumentalists Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington are The Blackheart Orchestra. This pioneering duo blend musical styles, seamlessly sidestepping boundaries to create music huge enough to fill a cathedral.
The Blackheart Orchestra is often likened to a ‘miniature orchestra’ as even though there are only two of them, on stage they play a large number of instruments all totally live. The music fuses acoustic folk and electronica and brings together stringed instruments with 80’s synthesisers and classical influences.
The BBC mistook them for an 8-piece band on first listen, (they enjoyed that!) and their stage resembles a space station of musical instruments. As The Blackheart Orchestra perform the show involves them continuously changing from electric and acoustic guitars, bowed guitar, piano, organ, bass and electronic percussion to vintage synthesisers, omnichord and melodica often playing two instruments at the same time in a complex choreographed weave of musical sounds, moods and textures.
The Blackheart Orchestra's music has been used on TV commercials and films and is currently the soundtrack to the brand new Best Director and Best Actress winning
British sci-fi movie ‘Charlie and Me’.
The Blackheart Orchestra has now been together for 10 years and during that time have released four albums and played over 1200 concerts from large to small, with tours of UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands and Denmark. Their latest album ‘Diving For Roses’ has received applause from both the music media with over 20 published reviews and has been praised by musical giants like Genesis’ Steve Hackett who described it as “Beautiful, powerful and inspiring.”
